For over 20 years, Hamar Weyne has been more than just a restaurant — it has been a home away from home for the Somali community and a place of discovery for Australians wanting to experience authentic East African cuisine.
Named after the historic coastal town of Hamarweyne in Somalia, our restaurant carries the spirit, warmth, and flavours of the homeland into every meal we serve. Hamarweyne is one of Somalia’s oldest and most culturally rich districts, known for its vibrant markets, welcoming people, and unforgettable traditional food. Inspired by these roots, our family set out on a journey to bring the true taste of Somalia to Australia.
When we first opened our doors two decades ago, our vision was simple: preserve the recipes passed down through generations and share them with the wider community. Every dish on our menu tells a story — from fragrant rice infused with traditional spices to slow-cooked meats, fresh flatbreads, and comforting stews prepared the same way they are back home.
Founded by Adeer — a Somali father, cook, and community leader — Hamar Weyne Café was built from the ground up, with Adeer standing behind the counter every day, plating every meal with care, and welcoming customers like family. In December 2022, we moved to our new home at Shop 57, The Mall Shopping Centre, beginning a new chapter while staying rooted in the same values: 100% halal ingredients, fresh daily cooking, and food that brings people together.
Today, after 21 years of serving the community, we remain proud of our heritage and grateful for the support that has made our journey possible.

More Than a Café
Hamar Weyne has always been about more than food. Adeer and the team have proudly sponsored the Heidelberg Stars — supporting young local athletes and giving back to the next generation in the suburb that raised the café.
We've hosted and fed visiting teams from as far as New Zealand, opened our doors for Eid celebrations with free zamzam water and dates on Jummah, and turned the café into a meeting place for families, elders, and friends across the West Heidelberg community.
The 2.8K+ followers on our Facebook page are mostly our regulars — people who grew up eating here. That trust, built over 21 years, is the heart of Hamar Weyne.
